Sixteen weeks ago I arrived here, and 12 weeks ago I walked in theatre to introduce myself as anesthetic nurse intern. First two weeks I didn't know who is nurse in charge, as they call it matrone. I was learning and observing, sharing my knowledge and skills with local anesthetic assistant and anesthesiologists. I walked in nightshift, without asking anyone permissions, just introduced myself and started working on the side of team. Everywhere I went, I just introduced myself and worked, and  soon all knew who I am, and I needed no further introduce myself anymore. And during this time we became friends. Theatre staff looked after me, and I did my best to help them. Even last month I had to leave early, quite often because of my circus project, I still tried to work with 11o% output. My shoes had name "Pöllö", and they always waited for me in changing room.

This was journey full of learning experience. I don't know what role exactly I had here. As they called me doctor Alex on the duty, when I was working my shifts. And I had dozens of incredible chances to tryout things that I never could perform home. Still first in mind I often thought about patients safety. As anesthetic nurse I probably said hundreds of times: " ..keep your eyes open, take one deep breath and have a nice dream, see u soon.." when putting people asleep, and I happily witnessed most of them waking up later. I also witnessed young nurses starting their careers in theatre, and becoming strong reliable staff members in short time. And it was about days that we became colleagues and friends. We learned from each others, and supported eachother other on the hard days.

I have to say, as medical unit theatre was another home for me. I never saw in my life so well functioning personnel management. I don't say that you wont find unhappy nurse there. Hundred percent happiness is not reality in social dynamics, you might face that anomaly only among retard or crazy people, and it only last for a moment. With full respect I'm not making fun on those. But I would say, that in theatre crew enjoyed each others company and worked together. And matrones are not being respected because of title they carry, but because people like them. I always found leadership management challenging, and I believe that home we have a lot of mid level bosses without proper talent or education, still doing the leadership. Still I'm happy to say that so far best boss I had, was in Namibian Katuturas Hospital!

Good bye is difficult, but this week is full of farewells and good byes. I found so many friends during this trip, and no nurse outfit, stethoscopes, thermometers, or any other instruments, that I could give them, will replace the gratitude that I carry for time we spend together. And Im really grateful for a ostrich egg that they gave me as farewell present!

Kuusitoista viikkoa sitten saavuin Namibiaan, kaksitoista viikkoa sitten kävelin leikkuriin ja esittelin itseäni sairaanhoitajaharjoittelijaksi joka tekee anestesiaan suuntavaa jaksoa. En tiennyt keskusteleveni osastonhoitajan kanssa, opin vasta myöhemmin että heitä kutsuttiin matroneiksi. Tarkkailin ja opettelin täkäläisten tapoja, jaoin omia osaamistaitoja ja kysenalaistin käytäntöjä. Tein töitä rinnakkain anestesiologien ja hoitajien parissa.Kävelin yövuoroihin kysymättä lupia, esittelin vaan itseäni ja ryhdyin töihin. Joka salissa minne menin aloitin esittelemella itseäni ja ryhtymällä hommiin, ja pian minun ei enää tarvinnut, kaikki tiesi kuka mä oon. Siinä aikana meistä tuli ystäviä henkilökunnan kanssa. HE katsoivat minuun perään ja mie yritin parhaani auttaakseen heitä. Ja vaikka viimeisen kuukauden aikana jouduin enemmän kuin useammin lähtemään aikaisemmin sirkusprojektini takia yritin antaa satakymmenen prosenttisesti työpanoksen. Mun kengissä luki " pöllö" ja ne odotti joka aamu mua pukkarissa.

Tämä matka on ollut täysi oppimisen kokemuksia. En tiedä mikä mun rooli tarkalleen oli. He kutsuivat mua tohtori Aleksiksi päivystystiimissä. Olihan minulla tehtävänsiirtoja lääkäreilta ja sairaanhoitajilta tehtävänä. Kuitenkin koitin pitää mielessäni joka päivä potilasturvallisuuden ja edustaa parhani mukaan potilaita. Anestesiahoitajan sanoin varmasti satoja kertoja potilailleni: " -Pidä silmät auki, vedä syvään henkeä sisään, ja nauti hyvistä unista, nähdään pian.. " Sain myös seurata heistä useiden heräämistä :) Sain myös seurata sivusta useamman nuoren kolleegan uran alkua leikkurissa, ja päivissä meisät tuli ystäviä ja kollegoita. Saimme tukea toisiamme päivittäin arjessa.

Täytyy sanoa että leikkurista oli tullut minulle toinen koti. En koskaan ole nähnyt aiemmni elämässäni näin hyvin organisoitua yksikköä. En väitä ettei sieltä löytyisi epätyytyväisiä hoitajia. Sellaista työyhteisöä ei ole oikeassa elämässä jossa kaikki olisi sataprosenttinen tyytyväisiä. Luulen että sellaisen voi nähdä vain ohimenevänä ilmiönä hullujen ja jälkeenjääneiden keskuudessa. Enkä kyllä dissaa kumpakaan näistä. Mutta täytyy sanoa että leikkurissa työyhteisö nauttii työympäristöstä ja toistensa seurasta. Ja esimiehet eivät nauti kunnioitusta asemansa tähden, vaan he ovat oikeasti pidettyjä työyhteisössä. Leikurissa on kuitenkin melkenin kaikkien etnisten ryhmien edustusta työyhteisössä. Minusta ihmisten johtaminen on ollut aina haastavaa, ja uskon että meillä kotona on läjäpäin välitason esimiehiä jotka ovat epäpäteviä tehtäviinsä koulutuksen puutteen tai heikkojen johtajaainesten tähden. Siitä huolimatta on pakko sanoa että siviilipuolella paras esimies on ollut minulla Namibian Katuturan sairaalassa!

Hyvästit on vaikea osa tätä matkaa, ja tämä viikko on niitä täysi. Minä löysin monia ystäviä tämän matkan aikana eikä jättämäni sairaalaasut, stetarit, kuumemittarit, tai mikään muu esine korvaa kiitollisuutta mitä kannan ajasta jonka vietimme yhdessä. Olen myös todella yllättynyt ja kiitollinen strutsin munasta jonka mulle luovutettiin tänään läksiäislahjaksi!
